HARBOR SAIL RACING
WEDNESDAY NIGHT SERIES

Close maneuvering Each spring, Juneau’s Harbor and the Gastineau Channel come alive with the sounds and colors of sailboat racing as local skippers compete in around-the-buoys racing for “top gun” honors for the year. Every Wednesday in May-September, beginning at 18:00 (6:00 pm) the horn sounds for the first of two races (wind dependent).

Racing Boats are PHRF-handicapped by the Racing Committee, with approximations made for unique boats, and races are run in accordance with U.S. Sailing Assn format, and the JYC General Sailing Instructions and specific rules for Spring and Fall Harbor Series. Members take pride in their accomplishments and in the knowledge and cameraderie gained through these competitions. Even people who don’t think of themselves as ‘racers’ can get something out of racing.

Although every skipper will admit he’d like to have a crew full of Olympic-caliber “rock stars” , it is possible for interested parties to get the chance to learn a lot about sailing just by being available as ‘pick-up crew’ during the season – skippers are often looking for crew members on short notice. Whether novice or seasoned cruiser, racing provides the opportunity to improve your skills and see how other sailors have solved problems and fine-tuned their sailing routines. Contact the Sail Squadron captain for more information.
